End of year means you have a lot of excess cardboard lying around so what better way to use it then by doing a lesson on collage!
I cut up a bunch of cardboard into different sizes and put them in trays for kids to choose freely. Each child was given a larger cardboard where their creations would be glued.
They ‘planned’ their ideas and placed pieces all around and ‘layered’ other pieces. They don’t need to make a picture but to just to have fun arranging the cardboard pieces to make an ‘abstract’ work of art. Of course some ended up making a picture which was Ok too.
The kids really enjoyed this and were ready to glue each piece. This was tricky because they had to move the pieces around , glue and remember where everything went. This was a great opportunity for them to be patient, and to really think about what they were doing.
Finally when everything was glued and dry they painted they work. Make sure the students paint two layers and are careful to paint around the pieces. Some experimented with splattering paint and the effect was great.

Collage is absolutely one of my favorite art activities to do with kids. I really like the idea of the card boards as they add a second layer for the kids to use 2 colors and its more 3D . I guess you also have to make sure that you don’t use cardboard that’s too thick otherwise the glue might not hold it. I
I also have seen when using 3d materials the kids have to be patient in letting it dry otherwise the stuff falls off

This is a great idea. I think I am going to run down to Bunnings and grab some boxes this weekend. We don’t have any cardboard lying around and I don’t want to have to wait. My special needs kids will love this 🙂

Thank you! Depending on the age you work with, this lesson can be adapted and the students can collage other items on top, add more texture, paint different designs, etc. Truly an open ended lesson that will look stunning every singel way. Thanks for stopping by!

Hi Echel- this lesson can take between 2 and 3 lessons depending on the lenght of time you have with your students. Remember the students have to plan, cut, assemble and glue their pieces and wiat for this to dry. Then they hve to paint the pieces. Enjoy!
