The holidays are sadly over and it’s time to think about what to do the first week back at school. It’s always exciting to start a new school year but I need some inspiration soon as my brain is still at the beach in Thailand!
Anyway, I thought I would share with you some ideas I started with my previous year. All About Me themes are always popular in the elementary grades so here are some self portrait ideas that I hope will inspire you. I would love to hear some of your ideas too.
Here we go…

Giant self portraits in grade four
This was a fun project the kids loved. These self portraits were HUGE and a bit time consuming but very worth doing.

Cardboard life sized self portraits in grade five
I love cardboard and I remember the school was brand new at the time so there was tons of it everywhere. Being the recycle queen that I am ( and ALL art teachers are ) I decided why not make life sized self portraits with the grade five class? It was a hit!

Self portraits with construction paper in grade one
Grade ones loved making their life sized portraits with butcher paper. Get the kids into pairs and have them outline each other. This is also a great way for them to get to know each other. The kids paint in the details and then add a life sized photograph of their faces and you have a winner here!

Progressive self portraits in grade two
These self portraits were awesome and showed a real improvement in facial placement. The grade twos did three progressive self portraits and were quite surprised to see how they got better with each try.

Many of you have asked me how to make and sell an e-book. It’s quite simple so don’t be afraid!
THE BASICS IN A NUTSHELL
First of all, you need to write your e-book in a word document or whichever word processing program you use. When you are happy with the end result and you have finished editing and adding nice photos, convert the document into a PDF document. Remember that photos are very important especially an art related book so make sure your pictures are good ones. Why not purchase a copy of one of my e-books so you can see the format? This way you’ll have some really cool lessons to do with your students and have a visual reference to help you create your own fabulous e-book 🙂
Next, upload your finished PDF e-book to a brilliant site I use called e-junkie which will store all of your digital products such as music, photos and e-books for you to sell. They have several plans for you to choose, as low as 5$ a month and the whole process it very easy to set up. I use Paypal and Google Checkouts as payment options within e-junkie and there are two more other options available to you. Sign up for a Paypal account here if you don’t have an account yet. Since you will be selling books or digital products you need to open a business or premier account. When I did all these steps it was an easy set up so don’t worry.
E-junkie will give you links for each of your products and posting these onto your blog or website is very easy . You can find all this information on the e-junkie site. I don’t know of other similar sites that provide this service but I am very happy so far.
If you have a self hosted WordPress blog or site, check out these WordPress eStore plugins that can also help you out.
You really don’t need to be a tech guru 🙂 Just someone with a lot of passion and plenty of good quality content. There are plenty of e-books out there so make sure yours is a great one! I hope I have motivated you a little to get out there and start creating and selling your e-books too. All the best and here’s to your future amazing e-book(s)!
Let me know how it goes.
