Setting Art Goals at the Beginning of a School Year

What are your art goals?

I love the beginning of a school year. You have new supplies, empty walls and a fresh new start with ten months of wonderful art projects and possibilities ahead! Everything is exciting and the students are ready and eager to get started.

Why not take advantage of this excitement during your first week and have your students think about what their goals are in art class? Setting some artistic goals can not only be a fun back to school activity, but also serve as a reminder for students what it is they want to achieve this new year.

The best way I found to do this was by making a big class mural somewhere in my classroom using a certain theme. So far I have done a garden theme, underwater world and last year’s theme was outer space. I added some basic details depending on the theme such as a submarine, space rocket  or big tree without leaves to get everyone jazzed up and curious. As each class visited me during the week, we talked about goals and what it means to be an artist.  Everyone got to add something to the mural with their goals written on it so it would be a visually available for everyone to see all year long.

Kids love seeing their goals plus everyone else’s goals. Go back and re-visit them throughout the year and do this at the end of the school year to see how everyone did. Write one yourself for each grade level or a big general one to show that we adults also need goals to help us on our way.

Here, here and here are the links to my previous posts on my goals from the past years in case you need a little bit of inspiration. Don’t forget to pop over to Facebook and ‘Like’ the Art Lessons For Kids page. 🙂

  1. Hello! I think goals are a great things for both student and teachers to keep. Sometimes in art class I do something called “Art Goals” just for that class period. Maybe for one class period the art goal of the class is to work on lining up quietly or to work on good craftsmanship on their artwork. I also think its important for teachers and adults to set goals and I wrote about a process that can help you make and keep your goals throughout a year. Great topic!
